The Endless Web – a rebinding
It recently came to our attention that a first edition of The Endless Web by Joan Evans, the definitive book on John Dickinson, had won a prize. In 2021, Linda Miles won the F. J. Ratchford Award for a Non Leather Binding, with her reworking described in her own words here.
The Endless Web by Joan Evans is a rebound 1955 first edition history of the renowned paper maker and stationer John Dickinson & Co Ltd. Historic images of the paper mills are printed on book cloth with an overlay of velum paper featuring an engineering drawing of John Dickinson’s patented cylinder mould machine. This is itself overlain by a band of Frogmore Mill’s ‘Banknote’ paper, which is also used for both doublures. The red and blue silk thread ‘endless’ web pattern wraps around front and back covers, referencing John Dickinson’s patented security paper design that was used in the manufacture of banknotes and postage stamps. The endpapers feature contemporary examples of John Dickinson’s papers including the famous ‘Basildon Bond’ writing paper. The book is presented in a bespoke facsimile stationery box.

*Bank note paper is no longer available as it went with the UK’s use of paper bank notes!
