Restoration is taking place in-house as well as off-site. Many of the smaller items will be cleaned by our own staff and volunteers, This is painstaking work. Each item has to be assessed as to the best course of treatment. Paper requires the use of specialist smoke sponges, which have to be carefully dabbed on each page and surface. The results are quite remarkable and you can imagine how long it takes to do a whole book! Rowena Haigh, our Collections Officer, can be seen at work here. This book was open in a display case in the museum at the time of the fire. Despite being undercover, the book is significantly damaged by smoke.
